Drake Withdraws Legal Request via Email Notice

UMG's Next Move Unclear

Email has become a powerful tool for transmitting legal notices with speed and efficiency. This was evident in the recent filing from Frozen Moments, LLC, which notified the New York Supreme Court and involved parties via email that it was withdrawing its Order to Show Cause. The petition, originally filed on November 25, 2024, sought pre-action disclosure and preservation of documents from UMG Recordings, Inc. and Spotify USA Inc.

Spotify, which had opposed the preaction petition, indicated no objection to the withdrawal and discontinuance of the case. However, the notice revealed that UMG had not yet responded to the filing but may have chosen to “reserve its position.” This response—or lack thereof—leaves open the possibility that UMG may be evaluating its next steps.

Drake had filed the petition alleging that UMG and Spotify conspired to inflate streaming numbers for Kendrick Lamar's track "Not Like Us," which he claimed was a diss track that defamed him.
