Jack Dorsey Drops the Axe: Block Lays Off 931 Employees in Brutal Email
The former Twitter CEO delivers a "straight facts" email cutting staff without warning

Block, the fintech giant behind Square and Cash App, is slashing 931 jobs—roughly 8% of its workforce—according to a blunt, all-lowercase email from CEO Jack Dorsey. More than 200 of those affected worked in California, with roles across engineering, HR, marketing, and legal taking the hit. Dorsey justified the move by citing strategy shifts, performance concerns, and a push for a leaner hierarchy, cutting 80 managers and demoting 193 others to individual contributor roles.
The cuts come as Block struggles with stock slumps and strategic realignment, but Dorsey insists this isn’t about hitting financial targets or replacing staff with AI. Instead, he argues that swift action is better than dragging out performance reviews. As laid-off workers flooded LinkedIn in search of new jobs, Block remained silent, declining to comment on the shake-up.
