Jeremy Hecht on TinyChat, Cold Emails, & Why Kendrick Beat Drake Without Playing the Algorithm

The hip-hop journalist explains how early internet hustle shaped his career—and why Kendrick’s analog strategy made “Not Like Us” a cultural reset.

In a new interview with Curtis King, Canadian journalist Jeremy Hecht traced his journey from TinyChat rap circles to industry insider, revealing how a mix of cold emails and bold vision built his career. “I’d hit people with, ‘This’ll take 60 seconds—just one question,’” he said, crediting that persistence—and a Rolling Stone writer’s push to "dream bigger"—as career-defining.

Hecht also weighed in on the Kendrick vs. Drake beef, saying Kendrick won by ignoring trends. “Drake used memes and DSP drops. Kendrick dropped songs with no streaming access, just audio on Instagram. That forced people to really listen,” he said. The takeaway? Control the medium, and you control the message.

“Kids who only knew vibe music are now dissecting bars,” Hecht added. “That’s not just a win for Kendrick—it’s a win for the art form.” Source.
