Netflix Rethinks Social Media Vetting After Karla Sofía Gascón Controversy
Backlash Over Past Posts Overshadows 'Emilia Pérez' Awards Campaign

After backlash over resurfaced posts from "Emilia Pérez" star Karla Sofía Gascón disrupted the film's awards campaign, Netflix is reconsidering its approach to vetting social media accounts. Netflix's Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria addressed the issue on "The Town with Matthew Belloni," admitting that while the controversy has been a distraction, reviewing every actor’s social media history is not standard industry practice.
She emphasised the challenge of monitoring thousands of people across global productions. The scandal erupted in January when journalist Sarah Hagi resurfaced Gascón's past racist and offensive posts, leading Netflix to stop covering her awards season travel expenses. Despite the fallout, Bajaria defended "Emilia Pérez," calling it a "bold and incredible film" and affirming that Netflix would still acquire it today. The film remains a major contender at this year's Oscars with 13 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director for Jacques Audiard, and acting nods for Gascón and Zoe Saldaña.
