Rockies Owner Shuts Down Soto Hopes

Monfort cites "East Coast" preference in fan email

The Colorado Rockies aren’t in the Juan Soto sweepstakes, but that didn’t stop one hopeful fan from asking owner Dick Monfort to make a move. Kevin Larson, a Rockies fan, emailed Monfort asking about the possibility of signing Soto, only to receive an eight-minute reply: “He has said publicly he wants to stay on East Coast,” Monfort wrote. Soto’s rumored $600 million asking price likely makes him unattainable for the Rockies, yet Monfort’s response sidestepped financial concerns, focusing instead on Soto’s preferences. The slugger, a 26-year-old superstar with MVP-level seasons under his belt, is expected to join one of five top-tier teams, including the Yankees and Dodgers. The Rockies’ history of big contracts, like Kris Bryant’s $182 million deal, hasn’t silenced critics of Monfort’s payroll strategy. But when it comes to Soto, even fans know the Rockies are out of the running for reasons beyond just money.
