Space Force Commander Fired After Email Pushback on JD Vance's Greenland Comments
Col. Susan Meyers was removed hours after sending a base-wide email distancing Pituffik Space Base from Vice President Vance’s political remarks.

Col. Susan Meyers, the now-former commander of Pituffik Space Base in Greenland, was fired Thursday after an internal email surfaced where she challenged Vice President JD Vance’s critique of Denmark’s role in Greenland. In the message to base personnel, Meyers emphasised unity among U.S., Danish, and Greenlandic staff, writing, “the concerns of the U.S. administration discussed by Vice President Vance… are not reflective of Pituffik Space Base.”
Her email, sent on March 31, was widely interpreted as a stand for diplomatic professionalism, but it quickly triggered backlash. The Pentagon announced her removal for “loss of confidence,” a spokesperson warned that undermining President Trump’s defence agenda would not be tolerated. Meyers had led the base since July 2024 and has been replaced by Col. Shawn Lee. Vice President Vance’s comments about Denmark’s “underinvestment” in Greenland had already drawn sharp rebukes from Danish officials, straining ties. Now, Meyers’ firing sends a stark message: even subtle dissent via email can carry career-ending consequences in today’s military climate.
