Thundermail: Mozilla Thunderbird’s Answer to Gmail
New Privacy-Focused Email Service Joins Thunderbird Pro Suite

Mozilla Thunderbird is expanding beyond its desktop roots with Thundermail, a new email service designed to rival Gmail while prioritizing user privacy. Unlike Google’s offering, Thundermail won’t use AI to scan emails, serve ads, or sell data. The service, currently in internal testing, quietly launched a beta signup site at Thundermail.com.
Thundermail is part of Thunderbird Pro, an open-source productivity ecosystem that includes encrypted file sharing (Thunderbird Send), smart scheduling (Thunderbird Appointment), and an AI-powered email assistant (Thunderbird Assist) with optional local processing. While Thunderbird Pro will initially be a paid service, free tiers with limitations are planned. With donation revenue skyrocketing—$8.6 million in 2023—the Thunderbird team is making a bold move to challenge Big Tech’s email dominance.
