U.S. Bank Watchdog’s Email Hacked, Sensitive Data Exposed

Hackers accessed months of confidential OCC emails tied to federally regulated banks—prompting a full security overhaul.

In a scene straight out of a cyber-thriller, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) confirmed that a February breach of its email system has been classified as a “major incident.” The hack exposed “highly sensitive” information tied to the financial health of U.S. banks under federal regulation, according to the agency. The OCC said it discovered the breach on February 11 and quickly shut down the compromised accounts. But the damage may already have been done—hackers reportedly accessed over 150,000 internal emails dating back to June 2023. That data likely included details from bank examinations and oversight activities critical to the U.S. financial system. Acting Comptroller Rodney Hood didn’t mince words, promising accountability and sweeping changes. “We’re addressing long-standing flaws and launching a top-to-bottom review of our IT security,” he said. External cybersecurity experts are now digging into the breach as the OCC scrambles to restore trust and plug digital holes.
